Letter to John Dolan from Dan Flaherty
John,

My prayers and fond memories are with the Dolan family, even months after Tim's passing.   My wife, Rene, and I were struck hard by the news.  I was a perennial rugby opponent, and good friend, of Tim while playing for the Baumholder RFC when Tim was leading Frankfurt.  I joined the Frankfurt team on two tours to England/Scotland.  I also coaxed him into attending the Interservice Tournament at Fort McNair, Wash D.C. in 1987 to help represent the Europe talent on the All-Army team.  We won the (official) Championship for the first time that year, with Tim a big part of the success.  I knew all too well his total multi-dimensional value on the field from our rivalry in Germany, and fortunately, as team captain, I was able to get him the time to showcase it on the All-Army team.  Both of us being unknowns (and Steve Carter, too, if my memory still works), and the first Germany soldiers to play All-Army, it was gratifying for us to be part of the first winning team.  As recently as two summers ago, Tim graciously took my 18-year old son and my God-son into his home (and into Sachsenhausen) for a night while they were hosteling around Europe for the summer (no telling what debauchery & fun was had!   Not to mention the probable stories/lies told about his dad).  My son was saddened, and sends his regrets, too.

One of  our teammates from the 1987 (webmaster note- this photo is in the gallery) team was able to scan our team picture (yeah, black & white) and send it to me.  Tim is the second from the right in the second row (I'm the guy with the ball).   Big Steve Carter is hovering over the team in the back row.  I have a hard copy from back then, but the negative has been lost.   I hope this small token will add a happy moment for you.

Please pass it to Mike (another of my old nemesis opponents from Nurnburg RFC, who I tried to get to play for All-Army), and tell him I'm still playing for the Atlanta Renegades (I'm playing where Tim left off - rotating between prop & 8).   I still think Mike's one of the most talented flankers I've ever seen on the pitch.   I'm sure he only got better playing for OMBAC.  Had the pleasure of playing alongside Brian, too, when he was passing through Germany one year.  I hope they both are doing well.

Rene says hello to Mike, wherever he may be (I'm told he's in OK?)

Steve:  great eulogy for a great man!   Good luck to ya.
